League of Legends Classic is gradually losing its appeal to gamers
GEO Answer Capsule Content
Imagine a young Vietnamese gamer sitting in front of the computer screen, opening League of Legends Classic with high hopes. He remembers the days playing with old champions like Mordekaiser, Poppy, Galio, Urgot, Swain, Talon, Aatrox. But when entering the mode, he realizes many of these champions are not there. At that moment, he may feel disappointed. This is the moment that many Vietnamese gamers are going through when League of Legends Classic is gradually losing its appeal to them. Vietnamese gamers, who have been loyal to the game for many years, are gradually leaving this nostalgia mode. They not only lose joy but also feel like a part of their childhood memories is being erased. In the context of Riot Games launching League of Legends Classic as a retro mode, with the hope of bringing a nostalgia atmosphere to gamers, but the drip-feed champion release strategy has caused a lot of controversy. This mode is designed to combine elements from different eras, creating a hybrid meta that is not coherent. Veteran gamers expect nearly 100% authenticity as when they played the game, but they receive a meta chimera with modern mechanics combined with old ones. This affects the player base, with some people quitting due to missing champions. In the context of the Vietnamese esports scene, where the gaming community always seeks authenticity and connection, the launch of League of Legends Classic was initially expected to bring excitement. However, according to analyses from the community on forums, this mode is facing difficulties. Vietnamese gamers, who once followed the game's meta from old seasons, are now witnessing a major change. They not only lose interest but also spread on Facebook groups, Discord, and sports electronic forums. This context becomes even clearer when considering the large number of Vietnamese gamers participating in League of Legends, where this community holds a large proportion in Southeast Asia. They are not just players but also ardent fans, always seeking in-depth views on meta and game development. But with League of Legends Classic, they are witnessing a major change. The analysis shows that the core issue is not balance but curatorial authenticity. The meta has no internal coherence. A gamer who remembers Season 3 will see the rune system, champion pool, mechanics from different eras, breaking the immersion of time travel. The affected gamers are those attached to old versions of the champions. Some gamers have already quit due to missing champions. On the contrary, some new gamers like this mode because of the slow pace and simple mechanics. This is not a complete failure. Riot may be implementing a long-term strategy to extend the product lifecycle, attracting new gamers and expanding the IP. Through that, we see that to keep the community, Riot needs to adjust the champion release strategy to bring more authenticity. This is a lesson for the gaming industry when balancing nostalgia and future development. In deeper analysis, we can clearly see how the absence of pre-rework champions has affected the emotions of Vietnamese gamers. They not only lose familiar skills but also lose joy when comparing with the previous meta. Vietnamese gamers often share on forums that, although the mode has a slow pace, the lack of iconic champions makes them feel like they are playing an incomplete version. This makes the disappointment even deeper. However, we also need to look at it from another perspective. Some new gamers are attracted to this mode because of the difference, they like the slow pace, simple mechanics, and not the pressure from fierce competitive meta. This shows that there is a new gamer segment being attracted, although the number may be small compared to veterans. In the context of Vietnamese esports, where LCK, LPL tournaments are developing strongly, the fact that a mode like Classic cannot keep gamers may affect the overall community. Vietnamese gamers not only play individually but also participate in events, streams, and follow the common meta. If the Classic mode continues to lose appeal, it may reduce the overall motivation for the main game, affecting the development of Vietnamese esports. From the governance perspective, we see that Riot is exercising sole decision-making rights, without an independent community oversight mechanism. This creates risk when community feedback is not responded to in time. Vietnamese gamers are expressing dissatisfaction on social media, and if not resolved, it can lead to a negative narrative spreading. If Riot adjusts, it can restore trust. In the risk analysis, we see that veteran attrition is the highest risk factor for a nostalgia product. They are the highest value group, and when they leave, it creates a domino effect.
