14 women, £650 and a consolation final: A table tennis story that will not appear on the scoreboard

On September 6, the Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre hosted its second annual ladies charity tournament. Organised by Julie Snowdon, a Table Tennis England staff member and centre secretary, the event raised £650 for Breast Cancer Now and collected more than 100 bras for recycling. Fourteen women took part, mostly drawn from the centre monthly ladies-only sessions. The format used group rounds before a main event and a consolation final, with the organisers putting fun and fair play first. This article reads the event as a community-driven initiative rather than a competitive one. There are no technical stats, no world rankings and no head-to-head records to analyse. Instead, the value lies in the way the tournament connects table tennis to breast cancer awareness. The main risk is that recreational players may outgrow a purely friendly format, but the real test is whether the community keeps growing. The next ladies session will be held on November 1 from 10am to 12pm.
